A dental implant is a "root" device, usually made of titanium, used in dentistry to support restorations that resemble a tooth or group of teeth to replace missing teeth.

Virtually all dental implants placed today are root-form endosseous implants. They appear similar to an actual tooth root ("root-form") and are placed within the bone(“endosseous”). The bone of the jaw accepts and Osseo integrates with the titanium post. Osseointegration refers to the fusion of the implant surface with the surrounding bone. Dental implants will fuse with bone; however, they lack the periodontal ligament, so they will still feel slightly different than natural teeth during chewing.

Dental implants can be used to support a number of dental prostheses, including crowns, implant-supported bridges, or dentures.[1] They can also be used as anchorage for orthodontic tooth movement.

Not everyone is a candidate for a dental implant, however. For a successful implant to take hold, a candidate must have proper bone density and a strong immune system. In all cases, dental implants require strict oral hygiene.

Implants are so well designed that they mimic the look and feel of natural teeth. They are usually made of a synthetic yet biocompatible material such as metal or ceramic.

Surgery is necessary to prepare the area for an implant and to place the implant in the mouth. Following the procedure, a period of time is required for the implant to take hold and for bone tissue to build up and anchor the device. In some cases, metal posts are inserted into the implant during a follow-up procedure to connect the tooth.

Because implants require surgery, patients are administered anesthesia and, if necessary, antibiotics are prescribed to stave off infection following the procedure.

Like any restoration, implants require diligent oral hygiene and proper care to ensure they last a long time.

Usually, implanting a tooth requires two steps. The first is surgically placing the “root like” implant fixture into the jaw. It will be done under the local anesthesia. The second step is restoring a crown (whole ceramic, porcelain fused to metal or whole metal) onto the implant fixture. The second step is performed four to six months after the first step.
